In Luminaria, all dragons descend from the four Elder Dragons: Veles, Emori’a, Dracul, and Lithe. Over time, their offspring evolved into Gemstone Dragons, beings of immense power tied to the natural and arcane forces of the world.

However, with the corruption of Dracul, a darker path was forged. His influence led to the creation of Corrupted Gemstone Dragons, twisted aberrations of their once-pure forms, embodying destruction, death, and dark magic.

The Gemstone Dragons are each tied to a specific region, element, and breath weapon. They are powerful beings, some of whom watch over their lands as protectors, while others remain isolated or elusive.

TYPES OF GEMSTONE DRAGONS

SAPPHIRE DRAGONS (COLD)

Native Region: The Frostheim Expanse
Breath Weapon: A blast of freezing sapphire mist, capable of encasing foes in solid ice.
Appearance: Deep blue, crystalline scales that shimmer like ice in moonlight.
Personality: Solitary, aloof, and highly territorial. Sapphire Dragons are known to lurk beneath frozen lakes or within glacial caverns, rarely seen except during times of great conflict. They are wise and patient, but can be ruthless when provoked.
Notable Figures: Varkul the Everfrost, a reclusive dragon rumored to have frozen an entire valley in a single breath.

EMERALD DRAGONS (ACID)

Native Region: The Misthallow Marsh
Breath Weapon: A cloud of virulent green mist, capable of dissolving armor, weapons, and flesh alike.
Appearance: Iridescent emerald-green scales, resembling moss-covered gemstones.
Personality: Clever, secretive, and cunning. Emerald Dragons prefer subtlety over brute force, often manipulating events from the shadows rather than engaging in direct combat. Many dwell deep within the marshes, their lairs hidden by dense fog and treacherous terrain.
Notable Figures: Sithari the Whispering Veil, said to have orchestrated an entire war between rival kingdoms without ever being seen.

RUBY DRAGONS (FIRE)

Native Region: The Gorvothkur Dominion
Breath Weapon: A torrent of molten flame, burning with the intensity of a volcanic eruption.
Appearance: Fiery red scales that glow like embers, with veins of molten gold running beneath.
Personality: Fierce, aggressive, and domineering. Ruby Dragons thrive in the volcanic wastelands of Gorvothkur, their temperaments as unstable as the eruptions that shape their homeland. They are known for hoarding enchanted weapons and relics of war, favoring strength over wisdom.
Notable Figures: Kael’Rath the Ashen Tyrant, a warlord dragon who once commanded an entire legion of fire giants.

DIAMOND DRAGONS (RADIANT)

Native Region: The Sunscorched Badlands
Breath Weapon: A blinding burst of radiant energy, capable of disintegrating darkness and searing enemies with celestial fire.
Appearance: Luminous white scales that refract light in dazzling prismatic hues.
Personality: Noble, proud, and often revered as holy beings. Diamond Dragons are symbols of wisdom and judgment, acting as guardians of ancient ruins and sacred sites. They are the rarest of the Gemstone Dragons and are often mistaken for celestial beings.
Notable Figures: Solrion the Dawnbringer, rumored to have purged an entire army of undead with a single breath.

AMETHYST DRAGONS (NECROTIC)

Native Region: The Queendom of Hillsburrow
Breath Weapon: A wave of violet energy, sapping the life force of all in its path and withering plants and creatures alike.
Appearance: Deep purple scales, shifting between light and darkness as if infused with shadow.
Personality: Mysterious, introspective, and deeply tied to the cycle of life and death. Amethyst Dragons are guardians of forgotten knowledge, and some mortals seek them out to learn the secrets of the afterlife. Unlike Corrupted Dragons, their necrotic power is not inherently evil, but rather a natural force of entropy.
Notable Figures: Nyxaria the Twilight Seer, said to foresee the deaths of kings and heroes before they occur.

CITRINE DRAGONS (LIGHTNING)

Native Region: The Red Rock Canyon
Breath Weapon: A crackling arc of golden lightning, capable of shattering stone and electrifying entire battlefields.
Appearance: Golden-yellow scales that flicker with electric energy, occasionally sparking when they move.
Personality: Restless, unpredictable, and fiercely independent. Citrine Dragons are nomadic by nature, rarely staying in one place for long. They are drawn to storms, battles, and high-energy environments, making their homes in the rocky cliffs and mesas of Red Rock Canyon.
Notable Figures: Jorvex the Thunderheart, a dragon worshipped as a storm god by a tribe of nomads.

PRISMATIC DRAGONS (MULTI-ELEMENTAL: RADIANT, FIRE, LIGHTNING)

Native Region: The Tzardom of Ashenstead
Breath Weapon: A chaotic surge of elemental energy, shifting unpredictably between radiant, fire, and lightning damage. The exact element is determined at the moment of attack, making their power unpredictable and devastating. In rare cases, they can unleash all three elements simultaneously, though this leaves them momentarily drained.
Appearance: Their scales constantly shift colors, reflecting the full spectrum of light, never settling on a single hue. As they move, they leave behind trails of shimmering aurora-like light, and their wings crackle with bursts of flame, lightning, and celestial radiance. Their eyes are featureless pools of swirling energy, reflecting the chaotic magic they embody.
Personality: Elusive, enigmatic, and ever-changing. Prismatic Dragons are highly intelligent but unpredictable, sometimes acting as oracles of fate, other times as agents of chaos. Unlike other dragons, they rarely remain in one place, instead wandering Luminaria in search of places where elemental magic is strongest.
Notable Figures:

  • Zyraath, The Starfire Oracle – A legendary Prismatic Dragon said to have foreseen the collapse of an empire and tried to prevent it. He vanished centuries ago, rumored to be hiding within an ever-burning storm.
  • Tzarkul, The Tyrant of Many Flames – A malevolent Prismatic Dragon who embraced destruction, once ruling over a war-torn kingdom and erasing entire armies with unpredictable elemental storms. Sealed away by an ancient order of monks, though some fear his return.
  • Auravex, The Wandering Flame – A Prismatic Dragon that appears only in times of great change. Believed to have guided the first rulers of Ashenstead, leaving behind crystalized rainbow feathers that contain immense magical power.

CORRUPTED GEMSTONE DRAGONS

Where there is light, there is also shadow. Dracul’s corruption spread like a disease, infecting some Gemstone Dragons and turning them into twisted monstrosities. These Corrupted Gemstone Dragons are a dark mirror of their untainted counterparts, existing only to bring ruin and despair.

Draconian Religions

DRACONIAN FAITH: THE WORSHIP OF THE ELDER DRAGONS

Throughout Luminaria, many revere the Elder Dragon Pantheon, despite conflicting scholarly opinions on their existence. Some believe the Elder Dragons have been extinct since before written history, while others claim they never existed at all. However, there are those who swear that the Elder Dragons still live, hidden in the deepest reaches of the world.

These various dragon-worshipping faiths fall under the umbrella term known as Draconian Faith. Its followers, called Draconi, are spread across multiple nations, with sects varying in doctrine and traditions, yet sharing common principles.

CORE BELIEFS

While each Draconian sect differs slightly in rituals and teachings, they all uphold fundamental beliefs about the nature of dragons and the cycles of existence:

  • Dragons embody the eternal cycles of life, death, and rebirth.
  • The Elder Dragons govern these cycles, ensuring balance and harmony in the world.
  • Five dragon aspects symbolize the stages of life:
    • Egg – Birth, potential.
    • Hatchling – Growth, exploration.
    • Adult – Strength, power, wisdom.
    • Elder – Decline, legacy, guidance.
    • Spirit – Transcendence, rebirth.

PRACTICES & RITUALS

WORSHIP & OFFERINGS

  • Devout Draconi offer tributes to the Elder Dragons through meditation, sacred chants, and ceremonial dances.
  • Incense, gemstones, and relics are common offerings, as they are believed to resonate with draconic energy.

LIFE RITUALS

Draconi traditions emphasize the major transitions of life, tying them to draconic symbolism.

  • Birth Rituals – Newborns receive egg blessings and naming ceremonies, ensuring a strong fate in the cycle.
  • Coming of Age – Hatchling Initiation Rites mark a child's passage into adolescence, often requiring a personal test of endurance, skill, or intellect.
  • Adulthood & Courtship –
    • Adult Dragon Consecration is a formal rite where an individual is recognized as fully grown in the eyes of their community.
    • Courtship Rituals mimic primal dragon mating displays, such as breath weapon dances or hunting challenges. A suitor may present their chosen partner with a hunted offering, and if accepted, the courtship begins.
    • Most Draconi believe in slow, deliberate courtship, taking months or even years to ensure compatibility before marriage. Divorce is rare and often discouraged.
  • Elderhood & Wisdom Sharing – As one reaches their later years, they are expected to pass on knowledge, whether through storytelling, mentorship, or guidance.
  • Death & Spirit Release – Funerary rites involve ceremonial chanting and sacred fire rituals, believed to help the deceased transition into the Spirit Dragon stage, completing the cycle.

PILGRIMAGES & SPIRITUAL JOURNEYS

Draconi often undertake pilgrimages to places of draconic significance, such as:

  • Ancient dragon ruins and temples dedicated to the Elder Dragons.
  • Elemental shrines, where the forces of nature converge.
  • Natural wonders, such as mountain peaks, volcanoes, and deep caverns, believed to be sacred to dragonkind.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Draconian Faith encourages followers to embrace the cycles of existence, learning from each life stage and striving for personal balance and enlightenment.

SYMBOLISM IN DRACONIAN FAITH

SACRED SYMBOLS

Each stage of the dragon life cycle corresponds to a symbolic artifact or emblem:

  • Dragon Egg – Represents potential and new beginnings.
  • Hatchling Claws – Symbolizes growth, curiosity, and exploration.
  • Adult Dragon Wings – Stands for power, wisdom, and self-mastery.
  • Elder Dragon Scales – Embodies protection, guidance, and legacy.
  • Spirit Dragon Flame – Represents transcendence, rebirth, and the eternal cycle.

SACRED TEXTS & SCRIPTURE

  • The Elder Scrolls – A collection of ancient teachings, prophecies, and myths attributed to the Elder Dragons. It contains parables, philosophies, and guidance on achieving balance through the cycles.

HOLIDAYS & FESTIVALS

Draconi observe sacred festivals aligning with seasonal changes, symbolizing the different stages of life.

  • Egg Festival (Spring Equinox) – Celebrates new life and potential, with blessings for children and new beginnings.
  • Hatchling Day (Summer Solstice) – Honors growth and discovery, featuring trials of skill and knowledge for the youth.
  • Adult Dragon Consecration (Autumnal Equinox) – Recognizes those who have reached adulthood, with ceremonial rites of passage.
  • Elder Wisdom Sharing (Winter Solstice) – A day for elders to pass on stories, experiences, and guidance to the younger generations.
  • Spirit Release (Annual Ancestor Reverence) – Honors the departed, with offerings and sacred fire rituals to guide their spirits.
  • Elemental Festivals – Seasonal celebrations honoring each elemental dragon and its corresponding aspect of nature.

CLERGY & SPIRITUAL LEADERS

The Draconian clergy consists of various spiritual roles, each overseeing different aspects of the cycles:

  • Dragon Priests/Priestesses – The spiritual leaders who serve as guides of the cycles, offering wisdom, blessings, and performing sacred rituals.
  • Cycle Keepers – Specialized monks or scholars devoted to a specific stage of life, mentoring those in their respective phases.
  • Dragonkin – Devout followers who embrace the teachings of the Elder Dragons, striving to live in harmony with the cycles.

PHILOSOPHY OF DRACONIAN FAITH

Draconian Faith is not just about worshiping dragons, but about understanding the deeper meaning behind their existence. It teaches:

  • The cycles of life must be respected, not resisted.
  • Growth, change, and transformation are inevitable and necessary.
  • Wisdom comes from embracing each stage, rather than clinging to any one phase of existence.
  • Balance must be maintained between the physical, spiritual, and elemental forces.

This faith connects the life cycles of dragons to mortal experiences, teaching that all beings are part of the same eternal cycle.

CONCLUSION

Draconian Faith remains one of the oldest spiritual traditions in Luminaria. Whether the Elder Dragons truly exist or not, their influence persists in the hearts of their followers. Through rituals, festivals, and sacred teachings, Draconi strive to walk the path of the dragons, embracing growth, wisdom, and the eternal cycle of transformation.
